Developing a Good Oral Care Routine

A good oral care routine ensures vibrant, healthy teeth and gums--particularly when you couple it with in-office preventive services from Mercer Park Dentistry. Dr. Ken McNabb and his team in Mercer Island, WA can show you ways to improve what you're doing at home. Feel confident in your smile!

When you start your day

Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Take a full two minutes, says the American Dental Association (ADA), and if you wish, use a mouth rinse.

Floss carefully around each tooth--especially those back molars--to eliminate plaque and its damaging bacteria. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recommends you carry floss or interdental picks with you to floss after a lunch out, a snack-filled business meeting or when you go away for the weekend.

Then, through the day, drink water. The more you consume, the more saliva you'll produce. Your mouth will be lower in harmful germs and have less plaque build-up, too.

Finally, you really are what you eat. So, consume a low-carbohydrate diet. Increase fiber (carrots, celery and apples), calcium and protein. Please avoid smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco, and limit your alcohol intake. These habits damage your gum tissue, slow healing and promote bacterial growth.

When you end your day

Brush and floss before bedtime. A clean mouth means fewer bacteria and fresher breath through the night. If you grind your teeth, ask your dentist in Mercer Island about a protective bite guard to wear as you sleep.

When you come to see us

Dr. McNabb will assess your teeth and gums for decay, dental bite and alignment, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. Your hygienist will clean your teeth, take X-rays and check your gum pockets.

Your dentist outlines a detailed care plan for each and every patient. It includes preventive care (fluoride treatments and plastic sealants as needed), restorative care (fillings, tooth replacements and more as required) and cosmetic services (teeth whitening, veneers or other treatments according to your personal goals).
